Money Flow: Budget & Expenses
Scan receipts, track spending, and stay on top of your budget — fast and private, on your device and your own iCloud. Version 1.5
About
Money Flow is a fast, private personal-finance tracker for iPhone and iPad. Log expenses, income, and transfers in seconds, organize them with customizable categories and accounts, set budgets and savings goals, and understand your habits through dashboards and insights built with Swift Charts. There are no accounts to create, and your financial data stays on your device and your own private iCloud — we never see it. The free version is supported by ads; upgrading to Money Flow Pro removes all ads and unlocks advanced insights, custom themes, and alternate app icons.
What’s new in version 1.5
- Multi-currency. Record transactions in any currency — perfect for travel and cross-border spending. (Money Flow Pro)
- Your choice of exchange rate. For each foreign transaction, lock today’s rate, follow the live rate, or enter your own custom rate.
- Bulk currency edit. Select many transactions and set their currency in a couple of taps.
- One consistent currency. Totals, balances, budgets, and charts are all shown in your chosen currency, converting other currencies automatically with daily rates (cached for offline use).
- Fast, friendly entry. Record an expense, income, or transfer in one tap, save quick-add templates for the things you log often, and browse a month calendar of each day’s income, spending, and transfers.
- Upcoming bills. A “coming up” card and agenda show what’s about to post before it does.
- Top merchants. See exactly where your money goes — by payee, not just category. (Money Flow Pro)
- Saved filters & PDF statements. Keep go-to views like “Reimbursable” one tap away, and export a shareable monthly PDF report. (PDF is Money Flow Pro)
- Net worth over time. Add assets (home, car, investments) and liabilities (loans, mortgage) and watch your net worth grow on a chart. (Money Flow Pro)
- Plan ahead. A cash-flow forecast with “safe to spend this month”, and a debt-payoff planner (snowball or avalanche) that estimates your debt-free date and interest saved. (Money Flow Pro)
- Subscription detection. Money Flow spots recurring charges — and price increases — right on your device, so you can start tracking them in a tap. (Money Flow Pro)
- Tags. Label transactions (#vacation, #reimbursable) across categories and see your spending by tag. (Money Flow Pro)
- Budget rollover. Carry unspent category budget into next month, envelope-style. (Money Flow Pro)
- Spending calendar. A month heatmap of where your money goes, day by day, with a no-spend-day counter.
- Transfer fees. Record an exchange/transfer fee that shows in your spending while the transfer stays balanced.
- Faster CSV & bulk edits. Save column-mapping presets for each bank’s export, and re-categorize, move, or re-currency many transactions at once — with undo.
- Budget alerts. Get a heads-up at 80% and 100% of a budget — and when you’re on track to overspend before month-end.
- Bill reminders. A notification before each recurring bill or subscription posts, so nothing catches you off guard.
- Weekly & monthly recap. A quick review of your spending, top categories, and highlights — computed entirely on your device.
What’s new in version 1.4
- Smarter import. Money Flow now reads more date formats, international number formats (like 1.234,56), accounting-style negatives in parentheses, and bank statements with separate Debit and Credit columns.
- More accurate charts. Transfers between your own accounts no longer count as spending.
- Cleaner iCloud sync. Duplicate default categories and accounts are tidied up automatically across your devices.
- Stronger privacy. With App Lock on, your finances stay hidden in the App Switcher.
- Better backups. Restoring keeps your category and account folders plus your key settings.
- Reliability. More dependable recurring transactions, plus polish for the widget, the Pro page, and keyboard handling.
What’s new in version 1.3
- Scan receipts. Snap a photo and Money Flow fills in the amount, merchant, and date automatically — all on your device.
- Split shared receipts. When a receipt includes other people’s items, pick only the ones you paid for — Money Flow even splits the tax and fees fairly.
- Subscriptions & Bills. See every recurring bill and subscription in one place, with what’s renewing next and your true monthly cost.
- Your Journey. Build a logging streak and earn milestones that keep you motivated.
- Back up & restore. Save a complete backup of everything to Files or iCloud Drive, and restore it anytime.
- A fresh new look. A brand-new app icon, plus refined ad placement so nothing blocks your view.
What’s new in version 1.1
- Account transfers & live balances. Move money between accounts with a dedicated Transfer type, and see each account’s current balance on the Dashboard and in Manage Accounts.
- Per-category budgets. Set a monthly limit on any category and track spending against it with progress bars and over-budget alerts in the new Budgets screen.
- Recurring transactions. Add subscriptions and regular bills once and let Money Flow log them automatically on schedule, including any that came due while the app was closed.
- Savings goals. Set targets (like a vacation fund) and track your progress, adding or withdrawing funds as you go.
- Face ID / passcode lock. Optionally require Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to open the app.
- Advanced filters & sorting. Filter the transaction list by type, category, account, date range, and amount, and sort by date or amount.
- Receipt photos. Attach a photo of a receipt to any transaction and view it later.
- Daily reminder. Turn on an optional daily notification to remind you to log your spending at a time you choose.
Getting started
- Add a transaction. Tap the + button, enter an amount, pick expense or income, and choose a category and account. Add an optional note and date.
- Customize categories and accounts. The app starts with sensible defaults (Groceries, Dining, Rent, Salary, Checking, Savings, and more). Edit names, icons, and colors, or add your own in Settings.
- See your insights. The Dashboard and Insights tabs break down spending by category and over time so you can spot trends at a glance.
- Add the widget. Long-press your Home or Lock Screen, tap +, and add the Money Flow widget to see your balance and recent activity without opening the app.
- Quick add with Siri & Shortcuts. Money Flow supports "Add Expense" and "Add Income" actions you can run from Shortcuts.
iCloud sync
When you are signed in to iCloud and the toggle in Settings → iCloud is on, your transactions, categories, accounts, budgets, savings goals, recurring items, and settings sync automatically across your iPhone and iPad through your own private iCloud account. Because the data lives in your iCloud, it also comes back if you reinstall the app on a new or reset device. If you prefer to keep everything on a single device, just leave iCloud sync off — the app works fully offline.
Importing & exporting
You can bring existing records in from a .csv file and export your data as CSV or Excel at any time from Settings. Exports go wherever you choose through the standard iOS share sheet — Files, Mail, AirDrop, and so on.
FAQ
Where is my data stored?
On your device, in Apple’s standard on-device database. If you enable iCloud sync, a copy is mirrored to your personal iCloud account so it stays in sync across your devices. We never receive or store your financial data.
Will my data survive if I delete and reinstall the app?
If iCloud sync was enabled, yes — your data is restored from your iCloud account when you reinstall and sign in to the same Apple Account. If iCloud sync was off, the data is stored only on the device and is removed when you delete the app, so export a backup first if you plan to delete it.
Does it sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Yes. With iCloud sync enabled on both devices and the same Apple Account signed in, changes flow between them automatically.
Do I need an account or internet connection?
No. Money Flow has no sign-in and works completely offline. iCloud sync is the only feature that uses the network, and it is optional.
What file formats can I import and export?
Import accepts CSV files. Export produces CSV and Excel (.xlsx) files.
How do recurring transactions work?
In Settings → Recurring Transactions, add an item with an amount, category, account, and how often it repeats (daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly). Money Flow posts each one automatically when it’s due — including any that came due while the app was closed — and you can pause, edit, or delete a rule at any time.
How do transfers and account balances work?
Choose Transfer when adding a transaction to move money from one account to another. Transfers don’t count as income or expense; they simply adjust each account’s balance. Current balances appear on the Dashboard and in Settings → Manage Accounts, calculated from each account’s starting balance plus its activity.
How do I lock the app?
Turn on Settings → Security to require Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode each time you open Money Flow. Authentication is handled entirely by iOS; the app never sees your passcode or biometric data.
Where are receipt photos stored?
Receipt photos you attach are stored on your device alongside the transaction, and — if iCloud sync is on — in your own private iCloud. They are never sent to us or anyone else.
