Summary: Star Maps does not collect or transmit your personal data. Your location, the camera view and your device's motion are all used only on your device to draw the sky — they are never stored on our servers or shared. The free version shows ads through Google AdMob; you can decline tracking and still use the whole app.
Star Maps is developed by MW Supply Limited ("we", "us"). Star Maps has no accounts, and we do not operate our own servers that collect your personal data. We cannot identify you personally.
We do not collect, store, sell, or transmit your personal information. Star Maps does not ask for your name, email, or a password, and there is no sign-in. The location, camera and motion data described below stay on your device and are never sent to us. The only data handled by a third party is the advertising data described in section 6, which is processed by Google to show ads in the free version — not by us.
The sky you see depends on where you are on Earth, so Star Maps uses your device's location to compute which stars, planets, the Sun, the Moon and satellites are above you and where they appear. Your location is used only on your device for this calculation. It is never stored on our servers, transmitted to us, sold, or shared. You can grant an approximate location rather than a precise one, and you can change or revoke this permission anytime in iOS Settings.
Star Maps uses the camera only to show the live view of the real sky behind the augmented-reality overlay, so the stars line up with what is actually in front of you. The camera image is never recorded, saved to your photo library, or uploaded. It is processed live on your device and discarded. You can revoke camera access anytime in iOS Settings; the app still works as a star chart without the live background.
Star Maps reads your device's motion sensors (such as the compass, gyroscope and accelerometer) only to know which way you are pointing, so it can align the on-screen sky with the real one as you move. This sensor data is used live on your device and is not collected, stored, or shared.
The free version of Star Maps is supported by ads provided through Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, Google may collect information such as your device's advertising identifier, general (e.g. country-level) location derived from your IP address, device and diagnostic information, and ad interactions. This data is collected and used by Google, in accordance with Google's policies — not by us.
On first launch you will be asked, through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, whether to allow tracking. If you decline, you can still use the entire app — ads are simply shown on a non-personalised basis. You can change this anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
Google's handling of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
Star Maps offers an optional auto-renewing subscription, Star Maps Plus (monthly or yearly), which unlocks fainter stars, the full satellite catalogue and flyover alerts, and removes ads. All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We never see or store your payment details. To enable Plus and restore purchases, the app checks your subscription status with Apple via StoreKit; Apple provides only the anonymized transaction and entitlement information needed to enable your benefits. You can view, change, or cancel your subscription anytime in your Apple Account settings. Apple's handling of payment data is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy.
To keep satellite passes and astronomical data accurate, Star Maps fetches public orbital and astronomical data from third-party sources such as CelesTrak (celestrak.org). These requests retrieve public data only — no personal information, and no information about you or your location, is ever sent in these requests.
Star Maps is suitable for a general audience and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. The advertising in the free version is provided by Google as described above.
Because we do not collect personal data on any server we control, we have nothing to retain or delete on our side. Your settings stay on your device and can be removed at any time by deleting the app.
If we change how Star Maps handles data, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above, and reflect material changes in the App Store privacy details for the affected version.
