Windrose 1.5 — App Store and TestFlight

These disclosures apply to Windrose 1.5. Earlier 1.4 installations continue to use the storage, analytics and advertising integrations described in the retained policy below.
Windrose has no app account system. Weather requests go to the services needed to return your chosen forecast or map. Places and preferences are stored locally, with private iCloud syncing when available. Optional advertising choices both start off. Advertising can run only in eligible App Store distribution after the required choices; internal TestFlight builds never initialize an advertising SDK or request ads. The advertising section explains these limits.
Upcoming version 1.6: The localized update is being prepared and is not yet the public App Store release. It uses Apple address search as well as the existing place-search provider. City-search text can be sent to Apple to find a place, including names entered in a local script. Apple handles those requests under its Privacy Policy. The storage, subscription and advertising practices below otherwise also describe that candidate.
Location and weather requests
When you grant location permission, Windrose uses your coordinates to request nearby weather. Coordinates can be precise when Precise Location is enabled. If you search for or save a place, requests use that place’s coordinates. You can use manual place search without granting device-location access. Optional background following requires separate permission; you can change it in iOS Settings.
Requests can include latitude and longitude, place-search text, an airport or region, map tiles, time and model parameters. Providers receive ordinary connection information such as your IP address and may retain request logs. Open-Meteo describes IP and URL logging, potentially including coordinates, and its retention practices in its terms and privacy information. Windrose does not attach an advertising identifier to weather requests and does not send saved places or weather coordinates to its advertising service.
Your device, iCloud and backups
Windrose stores saved and recent places, Home and Work labels, preferences, permission and advertising choices, earned perks and weather caches on your device. The widget uses a local shared snapshot. Windrose does not operate a developer server that stores your place collection.
When iCloud is available, saved places and Home/Work use encrypted place fields in a private CloudKit database belonging to your Apple Account. These records include names, coordinates, ordering, revisions and deletion state. They remain associated with the Apple Account used for syncing; encryption does not make them anonymous. Selected display, unit, forecast-model and radar preferences sync separately through Apple’s iCloud key-value storage. Current permission choices, advertising consent, recent places and earned perk status are not newly synced by version 1.5. Pro access is verified through the App Store.
Switching iCloud accounts pauses place uploads until you choose whether to keep the collection locally or import it into the current account. Earlier versions stored places and additional settings in iCloud key-value storage; version 1.5 preserves recovery information while migrating this legacy data. Older installations and other devices can still retain their copies.
Settings → Backup & Sync offers export, import and available local recovery controls. Exports contain place names, exact coordinates, Home/Work and selected preferences. Windrose does not password-encrypt exported JSON files. Store and share them carefully.
Deleting a place removes it from the active collection and syncs that deletion when synchronization succeeds. Protected local recovery snapshots and sync deletion records can retain previous information. Removing the app does not erase every iCloud copy, other-device copy, provider log or file you exported. Synced places can return after reinstalling. Apple handles its services under Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Services used for weather and maps
- Open-Meteo: forecasts, marine and air-quality models, ensemble rain estimates, upper-air fields and place search.
- RainViewer: precipitation radar imagery.
- NASA GIBS and EUMETSAT: infrared satellite imagery.
- NOAA Aviation Weather Center: aviation reports and advisories.
- U.S. National Weather Service, Hong Kong Observatory and MeteoAlarm / EUMETNET: supported official warnings.
- NOAA National Hurricane Center, Japan Meteorological Agency and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center: supported tropical-cyclone information.
- Apple MapKit and geocoding services: base maps and conversion of coordinates into a place name. Reverse geocoding can send your coordinates to Apple’s network service; it is not guaranteed to happen only on your device. Map requests describe the area you view. Apple handles these services under Apple’s Privacy Policy.
- GitHub-hosted public files: the NOAA GFS-derived pressure grid and airport catalogue. Hosting requests are subject to GitHub’s privacy statement.
A viewed map area does not necessarily indicate your device’s location. A provider may process request metadata under its own policy; an app display or cache does not make those requests on-device processing.
Optional advertising and tracking
Internal TestFlight builds do not initialize an advertising SDK or request real ads. Any test ad layout is a local, noninteractive placeholder. The optional LevelPlay integration and choices described below apply to eligible App Store distribution. Internal TestFlight builds do not transmit advertising data through this integration.
The free plan supports an inline weather-dashboard banner and optional video rewards using Unity LevelPlay with ironSource advertising and its included Ad Quality service. To deliver and measure ads, protect against fraud and diagnose service performance, these services may process device identifiers, IP address, ad interactions, ad information and diagnostics.
The provider may infer an approximate city, state or country from IP. Its privacy policy describes geolocation sharing with ad networks for cross-context advertising. This is separate from Windrose’s precise weather-coordinate requests. See the Unity Game Player and App User Privacy Policy for its processing and privacy-rights controls.
In Settings → Ad Privacy, Allow device data for advertising and Allow personalized advertising both start off. The first is permission for advertising device-data access; the second is a separate choice about using and sharing advertising data to select ads based on interests. Apple’s App Tracking Transparency permission is also required before Windrose starts advertising. If it is denied, restricted or undecided, Windrose requests no ads. Weather and navigation remain usable.
You can change the app choices at any time. If advertising is eligible to start and personalization is off, Windrose sends the provider a no-consent and do-not-sell-or-share signal. Turning off device data stops new ad requests and removes displayed banners. Change Apple’s tracking permission in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
Windrose Pro removes ads. When Pro is verified, Windrose stops requesting and showing ads. If an advertising service was already started before a purchase or consent change, stopping new ads cannot retract data previously transmitted or guarantee that every in-progress vendor diagnostic operation is recalled. Use the provider’s privacy controls for requests about data it already holds.
Analytics and diagnostics
Version 1.5 removes the standalone TelemetryDeck app-usage analytics integration and its outgoing event path. It deletes the known local pending-event cache when accessible. It does not send a replacement stream of app-usage or purchase events to a developer analytics server.
Advertising measurement and Ad Quality diagnostics remain part of the optional advertising service described above. Weather providers also receive technical request data. Version 1.4 used TelemetryDeck on free and Pro plans for app-usage, subscription-lifecycle and advertising-interaction events, with technical metadata, session identifiers and a hashed device-derived identifier. It also used standalone Unity Ads; an advertising startup already in progress could continue while Pro status was being resolved. Data already transmitted by earlier versions remains subject to the providers’ policies, including TelemetryDeck’s Privacy Policy.
Purchases and subscriptions
Apple processes Windrose Pro purchases. Windrose reads product prices, verified subscription transactions and renewal information to show your plan and unlock features. It does not receive your payment-card details, Apple Account password or Apple Account email. Version 1.5 does not send purchase transaction identifiers to a developer analytics server.
Manage billing and cancellation through the App Store or Settings → Windrose Pro → Manage or Cancel Subscription. Purchases are governed by the standard Apple terms of use.
Support and sharing
If you email support, we receive the sender address and whatever content you choose to include, and use it to handle your request. An ad report is optional and includes basic app/ad context, not weather coordinates or purchase credentials. System sharing sends the chosen forecast image or backup to the recipient or service you select; it is not an automatic upload to us.
Windrose is a general-audience weather app and is not designed specifically for children. Please contact us if you believe a child supplied personal information through a support request.
