Keylark

-·-  Translate, send, decode and learn Morse code on iPhone and iPad. Version 1.0

What it does

Keylark turns your iPhone or iPad into a complete Morse station. Type anything and send it as an audio tone, a flashing torch, a full-screen flash or vibration — all four perfectly in step. Point it at a sound or a flashing light and it reads the Morse back as text, working out the pitch and the sender's speed by itself. Practise on a straight key or an iambic paddle and see your own timing scored element by element. And when you want to actually learn the code, the full 40-character Koch course is there, one character at a time.

Common questions

Does Keylark record my audio or video?

No. Both decoders analyse the incoming signal on your device in real time and nothing is written to disk or sent anywhere. See the privacy policy.

Why does the first character sometimes take a moment?

A decoder cannot tell a dit from a dah until it knows how fast someone is sending. Keylark buffers the opening of a transmission and decodes it once it has worked the speed out, so you get the first character correctly rather than instantly and wrong.

What is Farnsworth spacing?

Characters are sent at a fast speed (20 wpm by default) while the gaps between them are stretched, so the overall rate is slow. It is the standard way to learn: you hear each character as a single shape from the very beginning instead of counting its parts, which is the habit that otherwise caps people around 10 wpm.

How do I cancel Pro?

Settings › Membership › Manage or cancel subscription, or in the Settings app under your Apple Account › Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Pro until the period ends. The lifetime unlock is a one-time purchase and never renews.

I paid but Pro is not showing.

Tap Restore purchases on the Membership page. Make sure you are signed in with the Apple Account you bought it on.

Does the flash work while the screen is off?

Keylark keeps the screen awake while it is sending or while the SOS beacon is running, so a long transmission is not cut short. Sending stops when the app goes to the background.

Is the SOS beacon really free?

Yes, and it always will be. It is a safety feature and it is not behind the paywall.

Keylark is a general-purpose signalling and learning tool, not emergency equipment. Do not rely on a phone as your only means of summoning help. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Accessibility

Every screen supports Dynamic Type up to the largest accessibility sizes and works with VoiceOver, including spoken "di-dah" readings of each character. Flashing output honours the system Dim Flashing Lights setting, and marks and spaces are never distinguished by colour alone.
