About

SentryBlack turns your own iPhone, iPad, or Mac into a private security camera. Set a device to watch a room and its screen dims to a discreet dark monitor view — one that always shows a clear recording indicator, so it is never hidden — while it detects motion, records event clips, and streams live to your other devices.

The big idea: your video stays on your devices and your own iCloud — never our cloud, and never a third-party cloud you didn't choose. Live video is end-to-end encrypted, device-to-device. No accounts, no company servers watching your home.

Getting started

Use a device as a camera: open SentryBlack, tap Use as a Camera, grant camera & microphone access, and press Dim Screen. The screen dims to a dark monitor view that always shows it is recording, while it keeps watching. Keep the device plugged in and propped up facing the area you want to protect.
Wake the screen: press and hold anywhere for about a second — a quick tap won't wake it, so it can't be triggered by accident.
Monitor from another device: on a second device signed into the same iCloud account, open SentryBlack and tap Monitor my Cameras. You'll see your cameras, get motion alerts, and can watch live.

Good to know

Because Apple stops the camera when an app is in the background or the device is locked, the camera device must stay on and in the app (screen dimmed, with the recording indicator showing) while it records — like every other phone-as-a-camera app. Keeping it plugged in is recommended.
Live view is fastest on the same Wi‑Fi; away from home you still get instant motion alerts with a snapshot, and (with Pro) the event clip.
All your cameras and events sync through your own private iCloud, so make sure your devices are signed into iCloud.

SentryBlack Pro

The free version records with motion detection, sends cross-device alerts, and streams live on your Wi‑Fi (supported by a small banner ad on non-camera screens). SentryBlack Pro adds cloud clip backup to your own iCloud, unlimited event history, HD live view, person detection & motion zones, multiple cameras, and removes all ads.

Pro is an auto-renewing subscription (monthly or annual) with a free trial. Manage or cancel anytime in your Apple Account settings. Your one subscription works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

FAQ

Does my video go to your servers?

No. Recordings stay on your device and, if you enable backup, in your own private iCloud. Live video is sent directly between your devices and is end-to-end encrypted. We operate no video servers. If your network blocks a direct connection, you can optionally add a relay server of your own — the video through it is still end-to-end encrypted and the relay cannot decrypt it.

The camera stopped when I locked the phone.

That's expected — iOS turns the camera off when the app isn't in the foreground. Leave the device in the app with the screen dimmed (and plugged in) while it’s on duty. The screen stays dim but never blank — the recording indicator is always visible.

Live view says it's unavailable.

Both devices must be signed into the same iCloud account. Live view connects fastest when both are on the same Wi‑Fi; on some networks a direct connection can't be made, and you'll still get motion alerts and event clips.

How do I restore my subscription?

Open Settings → Membership and tap Restore Purchases.
