Choose Daylight, Twilight or Quiet appearance. The atmospheric sky interprets forecast conditions; it is not a camera view. Tap Sources on Weather to inspect the forecast model, place, valid and download times, and time zone.
Choose help for your version
Windrose 1.5 is the current public App Store release. Help for earlier 1.4 installations remains available below. The 1.5 section also explains differences for invited TestFlight testers. Check your version in Settings → About in 1.5, or Settings → About & Data Sources in 1.4.
Windrose 1.5 — App Store and TestFlight help
The current release adds a clearer dashboard, Focus Window and private iCloud place sync. Coverage limits and subscription help still apply. Internal TestFlight builds never initialize an advertising SDK or request ads.
Focus Window
Look for a 30-minute outdoor window assessed against a complete hourly forecast block. Pro adds longer durations and your own temperature, rain and gust limits. Forecast matches remain estimates.
Using and troubleshooting Windrose 1.5
How do I use Windrose without location permission?
Skip onboarding, or choose Not now — I’ll search on its location page and Not now for notifications. On Weather, choose Search for a Place, search for a city and select the result. With a place already active, tap its name to open the place picker. Denying location still allows manual weather.
What does an unavailable or stale result mean?
A provider may be delayed, offline or missing coverage for the selected place. Windrose may retain an older result with its original time and an error or stale label. Try refresh when connected. Check the displayed source and valid time; a new download is not necessarily a new observation. A blank radar tile or unavailable warning feed is not evidence of clear weather.
How do I back up or move saved places?
Open Settings → Backup & Sync to inspect status, request a sync, or export/import places and selected preferences. Saved places and Home/Work use encrypted fields in private iCloud storage associated with your Apple Account. Sync is not a complete backup. Local places and file backups remain usable without iCloud.
Exports are unencrypted JSON containing exact coordinates and Home/Work labels; save them somewhere you trust. Imports offer Merge or Replace when the current store is healthy. Replace also removes omitted saved places from the approved synced collection, so keep a backup first.
If the iCloud account changes, uploads pause. Choose whether to keep the collection on this device or explicitly import it into the current account. Available recovery controls let you export or restore a previous collection. Keep your recovery copy while resolving an issue.
How do advertising choices work in Windrose 1.5?
Open Settings → Ad Privacy. Device-data and personalized-advertising choices start off. Free weather and navigation remain usable with both off. Apple’s tracking permission is a separate choice; denied, restricted or undecided tracking permission prevents ad requests, including nonpersonalized ads.
Internal TestFlight builds never initialize an advertising SDK or request ads. Any placeholder is local and cannot earn video rewards. The 1.5 implementation includes Unity LevelPlay (ironSource) and Ad Quality for eligible production distribution; standalone Unity Ads and TelemetryDeck have been removed. What do the specialist maps show?
Pro includes pressure maps, satellite imagery, Marine, Aviation and estimated future radar. The pressure map’s flow illustrates pressure patterns; it is not a measured wind field. Radar future frames are experimental local extrapolations whose accuracy decreases with lead time. Satellite, marine and aviation data have independent coverage and valid times. Inspect those times and the source before using a result.
How do Quiet Hours and background updates work?
Enable the desired notification choices in Windrose and allow notifications in iOS Settings. Quiet Hours skips routine notifications scheduled inside the chosen interval; it does not defer them to the end. Alerts, briefings, widgets and Live Activities depend on available data and system scheduling. iOS may delay background work; opening the app gives it an opportunity to refresh. Windrose does not provide guaranteed continuous monitoring.
Windrose 1.4 — retained help
Forecasts, observed radar and specialist weather tools. The Focus Window, Observatory appearance choices, Backup & Sync and Ad Privacy screens described in the 1.5 section are not part of 1.4.
How do I choose a place without granting location?
Location access is optional. On the Weather tab, choose Search for a Place if no place is active. Otherwise, tap the current place name to open the place picker and search. Select a result to load its forecast. You can change location permission later in iOS Settings.
How do I use radar and rain estimates?
Open Radar and press play, or scrub the timeline. Pinch to zoom and drag to move the map. Radar coverage and resolution vary by provider and region; zooming in does not add observations.
The rain chart uses forecast samples in 15-minute steps. Pro adds estimated future radar up to three hours ahead and a six-hour rain chart. Future radar is a local motion estimate, separate from the weather forecast; neither can promise the exact first drop.
Which warnings and tropical cyclones are included?
Official warnings are free for supported areas in Hong Kong, the United States and participating MeteoAlarm regions. European warnings name broad affected areas; their notifications are limited to red-level warnings. Consult the issuing authority for precise coverage and timing.
Storm guidance draws on NHC advisories for the Americas and JMA/JTWC information for the western Pacific. A forecast closest approach is an estimate, not an official warning. Missing imagery or an unavailable source is not evidence of safe conditions.
What comes with Free and Pro?
Free includes a seven-day forecast, 12 hours of detail, a one-hour rain chart, available observed radar, warnings, widgets and two saved places plus current location. Pro adds up to 16 days, 48 hourly hours, a six-hour rain chart, unlimited saved places, estimated future radar, satellite, pressure maps, Marine and Aviation, and removes ads.

Are there ads, and which privacy settings apply?
The free 1.4 release uses Unity Ads for a Weather banner and optional rewarded videos. It does not place ads on Radar or show a launch ad. Pro removes ads. Version 1.4 also includes TelemetryDeck analytics; its privacy behavior differs from version 1.5.
Read the App Store 1.4 privacy policy for the data involved and available choices. The 1.5 Settings → Ad Privacy route is not present in 1.4. Apple’s tracking permission can be reviewed in iOS Settings.
Why did an alert, widget or Live Activity not update?
Check your notification choices inside Windrose and notification permission in iOS Settings. Forecast alerts, morning briefings, widgets and Live Activities depend on available data, connectivity and iOS scheduling. Opening Windrose gives it an opportunity to refresh. Alerts are not guaranteed emergency delivery.
Can I use marine and aviation information everywhere?
Marine variables are model guidance for coastal and offshore locations; Windrose has no tide model. Aviation reports depend on reporting airports and hazard coverage. Winds aloft come from weather models. Satellite imagery has source, time and polar-coverage limits. These tools do not replace navigation equipment or an official weather briefing.
Subscriptions and restoring Pro
Both versions use Monthly and Annual App Store subscriptions. The app shows the current local price, billing period and any eligible introductory offer before purchase. A trial is not promised for every account or plan.
I subscribed, but Pro is not available.
Choose Restore Purchases on the Pro paywall or Membership screen while connected. If Settings shows Upgrade to Pro, open it to reach the paywall. Confirm that the App Store is using the Apple Account that purchased the subscription. Pending purchases must finish through Apple before access is granted. Contact support with the displayed error if the issue continues.
How do I cancel or change my plan?
Use the subscription-management control in Membership, or open iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Windrose. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. To avoid a charge after a free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. See Apple’s cancellation instructions and the standard Apple terms of use.
TestFlight purchase behavior is a testing environment and does not establish that a production subscription was purchased. Check Apple’s purchase confirmation and Membership for the state of your account.
Weather sources and limits
Sources include Open-Meteo, RainViewer, NOAA weather and aviation services, HKO, MeteoAlarm, JMA/JTWC/NHC, NASA GIBS and EUMETSAT. Coverage, available fields and update times vary. Windrose is an informational aid: use official warnings and certified marine or aviation briefings for decisions affecting safety.
