Important: Windrose is an informational aid and a supplement to — not a replacement for — official sources. Do not use it as the primary means of weather decision-making for flight, marine navigation, or any safety-critical activity. Always consult certified briefings and official warnings.
Open the Radar tab and press play to animate the loop. Drag the timeline to scrub to any moment, switch colour schemes in the settings menu, and pinch to zoom right in on the rain. With Pro, the timeline continues past “now” into the 3-hour rain forecast.
The precipitation radar is a global composite and covers most populated areas. Coverage and resolution vary by region; when you zoom in very close the radar is scaled up, so it looks blockier the further you zoom.
Your location is used to show the weather, radar and conditions where you are. Your coordinates are sent to the weather data providers above only to retrieve the forecast for that spot — they are never stored on our servers, linked to your identity, or used for advertising. You can also just search for places by name.
No — marine data (waves, swell, sea state, currents) is only available for coastal and offshore locations. Inland, Windrose will tell you so. Windrose does not currently include a tide model.
METARs, TAFs and SIGMETs come directly from the NOAA Aviation Weather Center; winds aloft are computed from numerical weather models. Windrose is for situational awareness only and is not a certified source for flight planning. Always obtain an official weather briefing.
Satellite comes from the NOAA GOES pair and Japan’s Himawari via NASA GIBS, together with EUMETSAT’s Meteosat satellites. Between them they cover the whole world — the only gap is beyond roughly 70° latitude, which no geostationary satellite can see, and there Windrose says so on the map rather than showing you an empty one: a blank cloud layer would read as a clear sky. The precipitation radar is unaffected and stays global.
Most of Europe, Hong Kong and the United States. Windrose carries MeteoAlarm — the warnings issued by Europe’s own national meteorological services, published through EUMETNET — along with Hong Kong Observatory signals (rainstorm, typhoon, thunderstorm, landslip and the rest) and US National Weather Service watches and warnings. European warning areas are published as broad administrative regions rather than precise shapes, so Windrose names the area and says a warning is near you, never that it is exactly where you are, and points you to your national service for the precise area and timing. Everywhere else there is no government warning source connected, and the app tells you that on the weather screen instead of leaving the section empty — an empty warnings list would read as “nothing is in force”, which is the last thing a safety feature should imply. Warnings are free for everyone, permanently.
Storm tracks, forecast cones and development areas come from the US National Hurricane Center (Atlantic, eastern and central Pacific), the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (West Pacific). A hurricane is named a hurricane and a typhoon a typhoon — those are basin-specific names, not two words for the same thing. The arrival estimate is derived from the issuing agency’s own forecast track and is not an official warning.
On the free plan, yes — one banner on the weather screen, and an optional short video you can choose to watch to unlock extra features for a day. There are never ads on the radar, and never a full-screen ad when you open the app. Windrose Pro removes all of them. Ads are served by Unity Ads; see the Privacy Policy for what they collect.

Tap Restore Purchases on the Membership screen or the Pro screen — your subscription is tied to your Apple Account, so it follows you to a new device or a reinstall.
