How to slow down music for dance practice on iPhone
A difficult passage is easier to rehearse when you can choose the pace and repeat just that section. Accompanist lets you do both with your own music files. Live speed controls and looping are free; the free version includes banner ads.
Start with music you can import
Use an audio file you can open in the Files app. Accompanist does not include a music catalogue and does not play Spotify or Apple Music subscription streams. If you do not have a file ready, start with the built-in demo to explore the controls.
Open Accompanist, choose Add music → Add files, and import your song. Select it from the library. Song selection may start playback depending on your settings, so keep your device volume comfortable while setting up.
Choose a practice speed
Pause playback before setting up this example. Set speed to 0.75× as one possible starting point, or choose a pace that suits the passage. Enable pitch lock if you want to keep the original musical key. Press Play and listen before beginning the exercise.
For an immediate start, leave Count me in off. Enable it when you want a count before the music. The metronome is a separate optional control.
Repeat the part that needs work
Set A at the beginning of your passage and B at its end, then enable the loop. Listen once to check the boundaries before rehearsing. Adjust them if the loop cuts off the musical phrase.
When you are ready for a full run-through, turn the loop off and return speed to 1×. Check the starting point and volume before continuing.
Prepare for the next class
For a single passage, the free live controls may be all you need. If you repeatedly use different speed and volume changes for a dancer, Accompanist Pro lets you save and replay a named routine. This records adjustments to the song, not a video of the dancer.
