Money Splitter

Split trip and group bills fairly. Create a trip, share the code with friends, and everyone adds what they paid — Money Splitter does the math and shows who owes who. Version 1.0

What it does

When a group of friends travels or shares costs, someone usually pays for things on behalf of the group. Money Splitter keeps track of every expense — what it was for, how much, who paid, and who it's shared among — and then works out the simplest set of payments to settle everyone up. No spreadsheets, no awkward maths.

Getting started

Create a trip. Tap + → Create a Trip, give it a name and currency.
Add the people. Open People and add everyone in the group. People who don't use the app can still be added by name.
Share the code. Tap the share button to send the 8-character trip code (e.g. ABCD-EFGH) or a join link. Friends open Money Splitter, tap Join with a Code, and they'll see the same trip.
Add expenses. Tap + on the expenses list. Enter what it was for and the amount, choose who paid, and how to split it.
Settle up. Open Balances to see who owes who and the fewest payments to clear all debts. Tap Settle when a payment is made to record it.

Ways to split an expense

Equally — divide evenly among the people you choose. Any odd cent is distributed fairly so the totals always add up exactly.
Exact amounts — type each person's share (they must add up to the total).
Percentages — give each person a percentage (they must add up to 100%).
Shares — weight the split, e.g. 2 shares for one person and 1 each for the others.

You can also split a single bill among more than one payer — turn on Multiple people paid when adding the expense.

Settling up

The Balances tab shows each person's net position — how much they're owed or how much they owe — and a suggested list of payments that clears everything with the fewest transfers. When someone actually pays another person back, tap Settle (or use Record a Payment) so the balances update for everyone.

Syncing with your group

Money Splitter uses Apple iCloud to keep a trip in sync across everyone in the group. For syncing to work, each person should be signed in to iCloud on their device (Settings → your name → iCloud). Your own trips also sync across your own iPhone and iPad. Changes appear when the app is opened or refreshed (pull down to refresh).

Privacy note: anyone who has a trip's invite code can view and edit that trip. Only share the code with people you want in the group.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on iPad?

Yes — Money Splitter works on iPhone and iPad, and your trips sync across both.

Can I split with people who don't have the app?

Yes. Add them by name in People. You can record what they paid and what they owe; you just won't sync live with them until they join with the code.

Can anyone in the trip edit an expense?

Yes — every member of a trip can add, edit, or delete expenses and record payments, so the group can keep things accurate together.

Is the math reliable?

Yes. All amounts are handled in whole cents and the splitting logic is extensively tested, so totals always reconcile exactly — no missing or extra pennies.

How do I leave a trip?

Open the trip → ••• → Leave Trip. It stays available to the other members, and you can rejoin anytime with the code.

Why do I see ads?

Money Splitter is free and supported by ads. You'll be asked once whether to allow tracking; you can decline and still use every feature — you'll just see less relevant ads.
