Use your iPhone as a dash cam

For Dashward 1.4.1 · Updated 3 November 2026

Dashward turns a supported iPhone or iPad into a Road and Cabin recorder. Start with free local recording and saving to Photos; choose a paid plan only when you need Pro tools or remote monitoring.

Check the cameras before buying equipment

Install Dashward, choose Dashcam and allow camera access. Check the Road and Cabin previews on the actual device. Simultaneous capture depends on the supported camera combination; an iPhone model name alone is not a guarantee. A Mac is a viewer, not a recording camera.

Set up while parked

  1. Secure the device in a suitable mount with the rear and front lenses uncovered. Keep it clear of your view and vehicle controls.
  2. Connect power and keep the device shaded and ventilated. Camera use, charging and direct sun can increase heat.
  3. Choose your cameras and storage allowance. Make a short test recording, stop it and play back both files before driving.
  4. Use location and microphone permissions only for the information you want recorded. Check the clip itself rather than relying only on the preview.

Keep Dashward open to record

Recording and Parking Sentry require Dashward in the foreground. Locking the phone or switching apps can interrupt camera capture. Auto-dimming lowers brightness while the app remains open; it is not background recording. Heat, battery or low storage can also interrupt capture.

Understand loop recording and the storage limit

Road and Cabin recordings are separate files. Loop cleanup removes eligible older unlocked clips, while protected clips and an active recording can keep usage above the chosen allowance. The allowance is not a reserved disk partition. Export important recordings and remove unneeded protected clips; keep free space on the device.

Which features are free?

Supported dual-camera local recording and saving to Photos are free. Pro adds tools including single-camera recording up to 4K/60, Parking Sentry, timelapse and ad-free capture. Dual capture is limited to 1080p per camera and depends on hardware and temperature. See the current plan comparison before subscribing.

Want to watch from another device?

Read the remote viewing guide. Connecting a monitor does not automatically start sharing: the driver reviews the audience and what will be shared.
